What Is Happening to the Original VetChroma?

The original VetChroma has had a long run in the canine reproduction market and remains a proven progesterone testing platform.

However, VetChroma 3 is now becoming the current-generation replacement for new analyzer sales.

This does not mean existing VetChroma machines suddenly become unusable.

Breeders who already own a genuine VetChroma can continue using the platform with compatible test kits and supplies while they remain supported and available.

The biggest change is that new customers entering the VetChroma ecosystem will increasingly be directed toward the VetChroma 3 rather than the older Classic analyzer.

K9 Reproduction has historically positioned VetChroma as one of the strongest options for customers prioritizing long-term testing control and an established canine reproduction platform.

The Classic VetChroma

Why Breeders Have Used It for Years

The original VetChroma was built around simplicity and portability.

It gave breeders the ability to perform quantitative canine progesterone testing without purchasing a large laboratory analyzer.

One of its strongest advantages has always been its compact footprint and battery capability.

The Classic VetChroma can operate using AA batteries, making it particularly useful for breeders who need to move their analyzer between locations.

Traditional VetChroma testing setups also use the VetChroma iChamber incubation workflow, something many existing VetChroma owners are already familiar with. K9's existing training library includes dedicated instruction for progesterone testing using the VetChroma iChamber.

Why Existing Owners Still Like the Classic VetChroma

The Classic VetChroma remains attractive because it is:

  • Compact

  • Portable

  • Familiar

  • Battery operated

  • Easy to transport

  • Proven in canine reproduction

  • Compatible with current VetChroma progesterone testing workflows

If you already own one and it is operating properly, there is no reason to assume you must immediately replace it simply because a new generation has arrived.

What Is the VetChroma 3?

The VetChroma 3 is a redesigned veterinary fluorescence immunoassay analyzer built to provide a more integrated and higher-capacity testing workflow.

Instead of simply making the original VetChroma slightly larger, Boditech created a much more substantial benchtop platform.

VetChroma 3 measures approximately:

186 mm wide × 320 mm deep × 206 mm high

and weighs approximately:

3.44 kg / 7.6 lb.

The system also includes a built-in printer and rear connectivity for power, RS-232, LAN and USB.

The Biggest Upgrade: Built-In Incubation

This is probably the most noticeable workflow improvement.

With the Classic VetChroma, incubation has traditionally been handled separately using the VetChroma incubation setup.

The VetChroma 3 integrates incubation directly into the analyzer.

That means:

No separate external incubator is required for the normal VetChroma 3 workflow.

For someone building a new testing setup, that means fewer separate pieces of equipment on the counter and a cleaner testing process.

VetChroma 3 Can Handle Up to Three Tests

Another major difference is testing capacity.

The Classic VetChroma was designed around a traditional individual testing workflow.

The VetChroma 3 can manage up to three tests simultaneously.

That may not matter much if you're testing one female occasionally.

But it becomes a significant advantage for:

  • Reproduction clinics

  • High-volume breeders

  • Veterinary practices

  • Breeders managing multiple females

  • Facilities offering progesterone testing as a service

Instead of waiting for one test before moving on to another, the newer platform is much better suited to a growing testing workload.

Bigger 7-Inch Touchscreen

VetChroma 3 also moves to a much larger 7-inch touchscreen interface.

The original VetChroma's smaller design helped make it portable.

VetChroma 3 takes the opposite approach.

It sacrifices some portability in exchange for:

a larger interface, easier test management and a more clinic-style user experience.

For a permanent testing station, that's a meaningful improvement.

Built-In Printer Remains

Both generations provide convenient result-printing capability.

VetChroma 3 continues this with an integrated printer built directly into the analyzer. The current product diagram also identifies dedicated power, RS-232, LAN and USB connections on the rear panel.

That makes the new machine better suited to a professional workstation where results may be documented, printed or managed as part of a larger testing operation.

What About the VetChroma Neo Progesterone Tests?

This is important for current VetChroma customers.

The newer VetChroma Progesterone Neo test format has already modernized the reagent side of the system.

K9's current VetChroma strategy uses the Neo platform because it offers a faster, room-temperature progesterone workflow compared with the older refrigerated reagent format. K9's internal product guidance specifically notes the move away from older refrigerated tests toward the room-temperature Neo format.

For canine progesterone testing, Neo provides approximately 10-minute testing and supports a flexible sample workflow.

So the move to VetChroma 3 isn't just about replacing a box.

It represents a larger modernization of the VetChroma ecosystem:

New-generation analyzer + current-generation VetChroma Neo reagents.

Is VetChroma 3 More Accurate Than the Old VetChroma?

We would be careful about describing VetChroma 3 as simply "more accurate" without assay-specific comparison data.

Both systems use fluorescence-based immunoassay technology and are designed to provide quantitative veterinary results.

The biggest reasons to upgrade are primarily:

workflow, capacity, integration and future platform support.

The Classic VetChroma already developed a strong reputation in the canine reproduction market.

VetChroma 3 builds on that platform with newer hardware and a significantly more integrated workflow rather than requiring existing VetChroma owners to assume their old analyzer suddenly produces poor results.

Is VetChroma 3 Portable?

Not in the same way as the Classic VetChroma.

This is one category where the old machine may actually be preferable for certain customers.

The original VetChroma's compact design and AA-battery capability made it genuinely portable. K9's prior product positioning specifically highlighted that portability.

VetChroma 3 weighs approximately 7.6 lb and is designed much more like a compact benchtop analyzer.

So if your priority is:

throw the analyzer in a case and take it between locations, the Classic VetChroma has an advantage.

If your priority is:

build a professional permanent progesterone testing station, VetChroma 3 is clearly the stronger design.

Which One Is Faster?

Using current VetChroma Neo progesterone testing, the actual progesterone assay workflow remains approximately 10 minutes.

The bigger difference isn't necessarily shaving more minutes off one individual test.

It's throughput.

Because VetChroma 3 can handle multiple tests and integrates incubation into the analyzer, the newer system becomes much more efficient when several samples need to be processed.

For someone testing one dog, the difference may feel modest.

For someone testing three dogs, the workflow difference becomes much more obvious.

Should Existing VetChroma Owners Upgrade?

Keep Your Classic VetChroma If:

Your machine is working properly.

You primarily test one dog at a time.

Portability is important.

You like the current VetChroma workflow.

You aren't running enough tests to benefit from a three-test platform.

In that situation, there may be no immediate reason to replace a working Classic VetChroma.

Consider VetChroma 3 If:

You are buying your first VetChroma.

You want the current-generation platform.

You regularly test multiple dogs.

You run a reproduction clinic.

You want built-in incubation.

You want a larger touchscreen.

You want fewer separate pieces of testing equipment.

You want a platform designed for a broader veterinary diagnostic menu.

Classic VetChroma vs. VetChroma 3: Which Would We Buy Today?

For someone who already owns a working Classic VetChroma, we would not automatically tell them to throw it away and upgrade.

The Classic has been a proven platform and still has advantages in portability.

But for a new machine purchase today, we would generally recommend moving into VetChroma 3.

Why?

Because it is the new-generation platform replacing the Classic machine, and it provides:

  • Built-in incubation

  • Up to three simultaneous tests

  • Larger 7-inch touchscreen

  • Integrated printer

  • Updated connectivity

  • Higher-volume workflow

  • Broader veterinary testing potential

  • A platform designed to carry VetChroma forward

The Bottom Line

The Classic VetChroma helped establish the VetChroma name in canine progesterone testing.

The VetChroma 3 is the next evolution of that system.

For mobile breeders or existing owners, the Classic machine may continue to make perfect sense.

For new customers, higher-volume breeders and reproduction clinics, VetChroma 3 is the more capable long-term platform.

As the original VetChroma is phased out, VetChroma 3 will become the primary path for customers who want to stay within the VetChroma ecosystem.
